Marc Young was nominated because he always pushes everyone to do better. He always says, “every day is an interview”. He is a great motivator and a great mentor.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, lived there for 18 years
Marc has lived in Portage County since January 2009. When he transferred to University Stevens Point from Cloquet Minnesota.
When he was recruited to University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Wisconsin, he was put in touch with the diversity recruiter Scott West. Scott kept in close contact with him during his time at Jr. College in MN. He was the reason why Marc chose out of the many options, to come to Stevens Point.
When Marc needed a job, Scott pointed him in the direction of the admissions office at UWSP. Marc started as an administrative assistant and noticed that there weren’t a lot of people that looked like him around. His mother said, “I’m not going to listen to you complain about something I know you can change”. Shortly after that conversation he became a campus tour guide and that's where he found his passion. After he graduated from UWSP, he became an admission's counselor for three and a half years, then he was promoted to interim associate director, then promoted to interim director and after seven months, he just recently assumed the director or recruitment roll. He now helps students from all kinds of backgrounds acclimate to Stevens Point and being a college student.
Marc has had to overcome quite a bit to get to where he is today. Overcoming the transition from Detroit, Michigan to Stevens Point, Wisconsin was one of the largest things he had to conquer. He had a hard time being away from his family and his support system. He also was a first-generation college student; his family didn’t know how to help him navigate this journey.Finances have always been a struggle for Marc, growing up in a impoverished environment, where all they knew was assistance. His mom worked very hard to provide for her three children. Marc also overcame getting out of Detroit and understanding that the world has more to offer.

Quote- “Every day is an interview”- There's always a time where somebody's watching.
What makes him happy?
His family and keeping in good communication with them. Of course, his wife, who betters him all the time. Marc also really enjoys his job, challenging though it maybe, the idea of being a part of the strong UWSP team gets him out of bed every day. He loves creating opportunities for others.
How does living in Portage County influence him?
Every day he gets the opportunity to meet people from all different walks of life. He gets to help and create access for students to explore UWSP. He has learned that there are different kinds of success, it's not all about “shiny jewelry and fancy cars”.
Who is his hero?
His mom is his hero, she has shown him how to overcome obstacles. She taught him that “there's a way out of no way”. She worked her way up from being a cleaning lady to a dental assistant, to a hygienist.
Marc also considers Scott West to be a hero in his life as well, he taught him how to love unconditionally and genuinely care about people. Marc strives to be like him every day.
