Jenifer was nominated as a hidden hero because she is a phenomenal educator. She goes to work everyday and loves her students unconditionally. Helping her students see all of the wonderful gifts they have and helping them explore and grow to their full potential. It takes a big heart to help shape little minds.

Jenifer was born in South Carolina, but raised in Rochelle, Illinois. She's lived in Portage County for the past 17 years and had known since she was a little girl that she wanted to be a teacher.  Growing up Jenifer had so many teachers that truly made a difference in her life, and when she was littler she would play school all of the time.  One day she wanted to be that person for others that would make a difference. She had dealt with hearing issues growing up and then saw the movie "Children of a Lesser God" in high school and decided she wanted to be a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing. For a while she did that and then her trajectory changed and changed her life, and so began her career working with deaf and hard of hearing children and families.

After moving to Georgia, she started teaching 4K in a new program and falling in love with Early Childhood Education. She has had other teaching jobs as her family continued to relocate and loved all of them. She believed that the foundation of her teaching was to love learning, be able to solve problems and manage their emotions in a healthy way.

When they moved back to Plover she had just had their third child and Stevens Point Schools began their 4K Program shortly after. She knew that's what she was called to do.  Now she has been teaching 4K since it began in 2007 and has truly loved every minute of it.  The relationships she has built with children and their families has made her who she is today. Jenifer has overcome countless obstacles, but she knows that is part of the journey.  She says she has a very supportive husband and family that encouraged her to always do what she needs to do to make her dreams come true.  "My teaching career has definitely exceeded my hopes and dreams".

Who's your hero?
My daddy-  He was the smartest, kindest, most generous man I know.  He was also my best friend and biggest fan.  We were always close, but after my mom passed away in 2012 and he moved to Plover in 2014, we got even closer.  He was always there for me and was the heart of our family, spending time and loved helping us with anything we needed.  He suffered from a terminal lung disease and we knew the years together were limited.  He never complained, and always thought of and put his family first.  When things started to get tough, we just did what we always did; made more memories and got through it together.   I was blessed enough to be able to care for him until he passed January 3, 2020.  He taught me so much in life, but so much more during those precious last months together.  He always said we all had a "sack of rocks" we carried in our lives.  Some sacks were heavier than others, but he always said someone else had it worse and we should help whenever we could.  My sack of rocks has gotten heavier since I lost him, but I know he's helping me carry mine and I will always strive to be like my hero, and put it down to help someone else carry theirs.

Jenifer's Favorite's:

Song: Walk by Faith, Jeremy Cam
Food:  Any seafood
Book:  The Bible and anything by Elin Hilderbrand
Quotes:  "If you judge people, you have no time to love them."
"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love."
"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier."   ~St.Mother Teresa

What makes you happy?
Reading, baking and spending time with my family!  Also watching my students grow and become confident in themselves and their abilities, and I love when former students come to see me!

How does living in Portage County influence you?
My husband was raised here and we came back to raise our children here. I love how supportive people are in our community and the pride they take in living here.  People truly want to help others and make this a better place for everyone.  It makes me want to be involved and do my part to make a positive impact on this community in whatever way I can.

Where are you headed?
After 28 years as an educator, I am retiring after this school year.  I haven't figured out where I am headed next!  There are some volunteer opportunities I am really excited about.  I will be glad to have more time to get involved.

What can people from the community learn from you?
Stay positive and it's ok to lean on others.  Life gets hard and sad and doesn't go the way we want or expect.  Allow people to help you and focus on the good and the blessings in each day and it will help you get through the tough times.

What is your most deeply held belief?
My Catholic faith is at the center of all that I am and I try to live it everyday. There is yet another quote, by Maya Angelou, that says, "Do the best you can until you know better.  Then, when you know better, do better."  I go back to this time and time again when I make mistakes in my work, in my family, my faith and in my relationships.  It keeps me inspired that I can always do better and be better whatever the circumstance is.

Trisha Roberts - Jenifer is certainly a hero. The care and love she gave her parents says so much about a person. She is such a loving person. She cares about her students and loves her family BIG. She certainly has my vote.

Angie Nyquist - Jenifer is indeed a hidden hero...quietly, yet profoundly impacting the lives of her students as well as her family and friends.
