Ray Potocki was nominated for People of Portage County because he is an inspiration to so many in our community.  Ray served our country as a United States Marine Corp. and then worked in Central Wisconsin law enforcement for much of his life.  Ray is always volunteering whether it be on the Police Auxiliary team or making brats and burgers for a fundraiser- he does it all with a smile.  Ray's selfless actions are a reminder that there are good people in this world.

Ray Potocki was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.  He has lived in Portage County for 66 years. He is a veteran and retired law enforcement personnel. Ray cheers for the Bears and the Packers, except for when the Bears play the Packers.

In 1960 Ray joined the local Stevens Point police department, then in 1966 he transferred to the sheriff's department and he retired from there after 22 years of service. Two years later he went into the court system and worked as a bailiff for another 14 years. After retiring from there as a chief bailiff about 6 years ago the Stevens Point Police Department started the police auxiliary. He applied and worked there until December of 2018. At the end of Ray’s professional career he had a grand total of 50 years of service.

Now he plays in a family band as an accordionist, guitarist and mandolinist.  You can find him playing at The Whispering Pines, The Lodge, The Lincoln Center and when the County Home has prom night he’ll be there. He is also still involved in the Marine Corps League.

What makes you happy?

Traveling to New Mexico in the winter. Playing music to a captive audience. Of course, all those years in law enforcement.

Who's your Hero?

General Paton because he did a good job during World War 2.

Ray’s Favorites:

Food: Taco’s, refried beans, Spanish rice, and good tequila

Song: Anything by Josh Turner or Johnny Cash (who he’s met in person when he performed at University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point)

Song to play: Polka and Country

Magazine: Semper Fi and Leatherneck

Quote: The Marine Corps taught him; “If you want to live longer, stay in shape”.
